The Thought Bubble

Are you thinking about what you’re thinking about? Studies show ( speakers and preachers do too) that we don’t really often think about what we are thinking about. Sometimes, it’s much easier to just let a thought play out in our minds. When we let thoughts play out in our minds, this is often the best time that most of us gain our inspiration to move from reaction to action.

For many of us, not thinking about what we think about can be costly, because we realize that as we inventory our minds, we find patterns of decisions, habits, and inner vows that we have sworn to as a result of something that occured years ago in our lives.

The bible is so laser on how to capture the thoughts that we think about. I am a Preacher’s Kid, in love with God, and can speak in tongues but must admit that I too, have had challenges in the area of capturing thoughts. I knew that I had a deep relationship with God many years ago, yet I allowed society and Satan to form an orphaned mentality in my mind where I told myself that no one would ever love me the way my parents did, so I should just reject everyone. How many of you know, when you swear to something, that becomes your treasure and your present reality, after all, “Where your treasure is, there you heart will be also!”. It is really true.

One thing that we should do is watch out for mixed emotions. Reality TV makes schizophrenia seem sexy. It’s instability. Increased frustration, tantrums & depressive episodes may be trying to overtake you & in return you may want to give into them. It’s an attack so cast it down!

They hurt me…..punch them! Image

Oh, no you didn’t take my man…..I’m gonna pull your hair!

Know that God knows that we have emotions but He is not an emotional God. He does not want us to carry our emotions on our sleeves or allow every single thing we are thinking about to overtake us. No! We were created for more.

If you find yourself in a moment of loneliness don’t take it to Facebook and profess your need to have a mate and what you would cook for him or say to him if he were in your presence. If Johnny hurt you and you are scorned, keep it off of Facebook because if y’all ever go to court or are involved in a child custody battle, he could use this social media exchange to prove your are emotionally unstable. C’mon, you were made for more.

Recognize all of these things as an attack from Satan himself to step us out of our peace and what we know to be true. This morning during our worship time, Tally, my husband, and I read the following scripture found in Philippians 4:6, 8:

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.

So how do you capture thoughts and keep these thoughts in their proper place?

  1. Know the root? Confess the best! Everything we do starts in our mindset. Micheal Orion Carter, an amazing international minister of the Gospel shared this status on his Facebook page this morning: ”  Your mind is in the middle of your present circumstances and your future manifestation. All that you need is inside of your Spirit, through Christ, so allow your mind to be the bridge from what physically can’t be seen to into what will be seen” Hot dog, hot dog, that is a good word Minister Carter!
  2. Know that God loves you unconditionally so if you are in a moment of temporary emotions, acknowledge them and surrender them to God. Don’t allow yourself to be over taken by them. John 10:10 says ” The thief comes to kill, steal, and destroy!” You best believe that he is on the job! God has given you the weapon of confession so use it!
  3. Do a Thought Bubble- Locate what you are thinking about as a way to establish your current patterns of thought! I often do this exercise with my expressive therapy clients to help them understand what they are thinking about so try it and look for the recurring pattern! Image
  4. Get peace with yourself and your circle- Peace is a very strong word and it’s often difficult to achieve when we are looking around at our present circumstances. Thoughts are created to assist us with expressing the visual things we are sensing. Ever wondered how a bird can fly high in the sky yet be in tune to the little nest that he needs to reach? What if we could develop an aerial view to see things above and not around us? I am convinced that this would taper off our desire to become emotionally wrangled in situations that we experience. Ask God for you to see things the way that He does. I am certain that He will aide you!

Stay encouraged.

Go Get It: Getting Your Passion

Image

“God allowed us to reach this point in order to take us to the next level.”. These were the words of Erica speaking of the relationship with her sister and the eminent sabbatical of the group Mary Mary. I’ve enjoyed watching their show for the past two seasons on WE and have appreciated the position they have taken as a gospel group going mainstream with their edgy yet anointed songs that transform our thinking and motivate us to go for everything God has for us.

Yet in the midst of watching their show tonight titled, “Fight of a Lifetime”. I am sure that it indeed has been a fight of a lifetime for many people. I sense that there are many people in a stage of life where they want to break out from the normalcy that they have been engaged in and return to their happy place. In 2012 Forbes Magazine reported that only nineteen percent (19%) of people were satisfied on their jobs. Many of them often worked from their cubicle fantasizing of the clock striking five o’clock so like Clark Kent, they could turn into their Superman “type” in the studio, at the sewing machine, or in the kitchen.

Whether that happy place is a six figure corporate executive leaving his position to save children on the streets of Cambodia or a medical doctor who decides to become an entrepreneur, or like Mary Mary, it may be that you suddenly realize that your passion for touring and making records has blessed you to arrive to a wonderful place in your life filled with fortune and fame; yet the passion of changing diapers and being a housewife is the calling that you wish to walk in. Whatever your expression, the chains of obligation are slowly falling off many and they are becoming impressed with conviction to follow the road less traveled and get to the essence of getting to their own happy.

From the time we start school, we are taught to get a good education and play sports so we can get a scholarship. Our expression in school may have been art class or baking cookies or for others designing software. Technology and passion have cleared the way for many to develop their successful vocations without stepping foot into the walls of a university. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Steven Spielberg, to name a few are successful innovators who traveled the road less traveled and the against the opinions of man to follow their dreams.

Mary Mary have experienced an awesome career that has spanned many years and have opened the door to other gospel artists breaking into the mainstream. Despite what they may choose in their path, the decision to follow their peace will be their ultimate success.
